An automatic pool playing robot - how hard could it be? Turns out harder than I thought. It took me quite a while to work through all the difficulties of this project but when it all finally came together is so worth it. To my surprise the most interesting aspect of this project is using the cue to play real games of pool over the internet. Let me know if you think twitch plays billiards would be worthwhile...

@Stuff Made Here *Please try to make a cloak blanket (like on Harry Potter) or cloak clothes* *Maybe Smarter Every Day could help, maybe a collab* I remember years ago on LVdownload someone showed a solder run from a building (he was 99% invisible) towards a tank that was just damage. When he got to the tank he became visible. I don't know if that was just trick photography or not, but it looked very cool. Thank you Cheers

Amazing work and amazing presentation. You are clearly talented in more ways than one. It is tempting to say that I've "been there, done that" but that would be a lie -- I was never able to fully comprehend quarternion math ( just borrowed other people's code for everything 3d), and I would never be able to make anything nearly as entertaining as this video. However, since I also dabbled in robotics, my suggestion would be to get rid of RC servos if you want to increase precision. They have a long geartrain, lots of backlash, usually cheap pots for position encoder, plus sometimes a very weird internal software PID algorithms. All these things are very hard to account for when you write your own robot software. IMO a simple stepper would give a much better precision (would require initial position calibration though), and the best option -- an optically encoded brushless linear actuator. Just my couple of cents.

The software for ball detection and projecting the traced lines onto the pool table is something I have been wanting to setup on my table at home for years. For a while there was a VR Pool company that had software they would setup at installations like bars and night clubs. It was very corporate level though and last I checked any open source options were stalled. I sure wish that part of it could be made available for people to use. Then again I understand its probably not very close to hobbyist level ability at this stage.

Not sure if you already ate familiar with this concept, but for to l troubleshooting, half splitting can turn an unapproachable mess into discrete testable systems. Separate every component and isolate all the inputs. Ie: you could have given the servo assembly known positions to see if it deflected by the expected amount. If it fails, the fault is downstream of the software, if it passes, it's upstream. Not sure how much it would have helped to find two concurrent errors in wildly different points in the total system, but it's still a good workflow tool to have in your toolbox.

Get a better tip and ferrule. McDermott makes a good solid ferrule. A real pressed leather tip. Use JB weld to glue it on. This will improve the spin that can be put on the ball. A smaller diameter tip like an. 11.5 or 11. Will make it easier to get crazy amounts of arc. Going even smaller like a 10 and with a fair amount of practice. The amount of english than can be put on a shot. Rates up there with a super power. You just have to use a lot of chalk between shots. Get a tip scuffer to keep the tip rough to hold plenty of chalk.
